It’s true.

One day I pushed myself so hard in a bike race, and was breathing so hard that I tasted blood in my mouth.

Having researched the phenomenon I found thus;

This happens when you push your lungs so hard for oxygen that microscopic parts of them break off and go up your wind pipe.
