“Translation” program??!!
I thought the time of funny sounding instructions for Japanese products was over ……
As far as my proficiency allows me to judge (bilingual in German and Frenh) the German “translation†and (to a lesser extent) the French one create hilarity and/or anger.
Why?
In many cases, a word does not mean anything without considering the context. This is even true as you use the colloquial form of speech/writing.
Example:
Well – means what?
- A place where you can drink water (or drill for oil)?
- An interjection reininforcing what you say (“well over 10 000â€)?
- An interjection expressing some doubt (because at the same time you are scratching your head)???
Your “translation†program opts for the alternative no. 1 in German and in French – although in ordinary conversations the frequency of well = watersupply should be quite low.
Translation is just more than transcription from the dictionary.
At the best your program gives a rough copy, but for many cases even scratching my head did not help me to understand the German text without looking at the English text.

I am fluent in German myself (I spent a year living there) and tested the script and to me it seemed to work great.
There will always be some innacuracies in translation - even when dealing with real life human beings (!) but as far as getting your entire collection of websites and web pages translated into another language I think this tool is truly outstanding.
I think it will be many years (if ever) until a piece of software can translate something into 9 different languages to the quality that passes the test of a native speaker but this is certainly a great tool to get more content for your website very quickly.

I just thought your statement was a bit hard to believe: “I am fluent in German myself (I spent a year living there)”
I have parents who speak only Korean (no English). I was born in Korea. I have lived in Korea for the past 2 years now.
I would hardly consider myself even close to fluent in Korean.
If you became fluent in German just from living there for a year I want to know your secret to learning languages!
In any case, I doubt software will ever preclude the need for a human editor. But if it does most of the work for you, that’s still a great thing.

3 things on that..
#1. You’re not me.
#2. You get a German girlfriend, live with Germans, work at a German University, speaking German.
#3. You also study it for 6 years at university
But hey - let’s not split Herrs here okay? I can speak German pretty well, that’s my point..

Wow I haven’t been back for longer than I thought. Thanks for your quick response.
Anyway, I think your point #3 was probably the “secret” you didn’t mention
I have realized by now that actually putting in the work to study a language is quite a bit more effective than just living somewhere where it is spoken (and yes that includes having a native girlfriend~).
Just to let you know however, I saw this product being used on the Internet, and the Korean translation is basically non-intelligible.
I think software-wise, it will still be quite some time before translations involving a Western-based language to an Eastern-based language start becoming accurate.
