However:-

It wasn’t without its dodgy moments.

Especially when I went huckleberry picking in the mountain peaks of northern Idaho.

Huckleberries (in case you didn’t know) only grow in the wild and they’re tasty as heck so you have to go off the beaten track to find ’em.

And that means bears.

Lots of bears.

You couldn’t walk more than a couple of meters up there without stepping in bear poop.

Bloody frightening.

My hosts were laughing it off like it was no big thing but they hadn’t seen what I had.

In the parking lot at the top of the mountain, before we set off into the trails, I’d seen a guy heading out into the woods with his family to go picking too.

Only he was prepared:-

He strapped a pistol to his belt.

Boo-yah.

He knew – like me – that if the grizzly hit the fan he was going to need bulletry backup.

It’s the same online:-
