“Dear Mr. Cheney:

Sure, I realize you want people to open your multiple emails every day – and purchase from you.

[ Translation: “I think selling is evil”]

Yet your use of graphic sexual references, anatomy and fecal waste products is crass and offensive

[ Translation: “I’m struggling in business and am trying to convey a professional demeanor. And yet here you are talking all normal-like and making $60k a month in commissions. I’m pissed.” ]

You’ve got a wide cross-section of people on your list, and many of them really hate this approach.

[ Translation: “I have a list but nobody’s buying my stuff and I’m projecting my anger and frustration onto you. I also feel anything I feel must also be what everyone is feeling because I am all-knowing.”

There are many others on your list who are also alienated by your use of rough, unrefined language and imagery. I am not alone in being turned off by any business person who regularly uses such a childish, locker-room, school yard nastiness approach to sales and marketing.

[ Translation: “My head hurts trying to understand how you can make so much money just being yourself when I’m having to pretend to be something I’m not and it’s not working.” ]

I’m willing to take a look at your offers – if you show yourself to be civil, sensitive to others and their tastes.

[ Translation: “I’m threatening not to buy your stuff in the hope you will become more conservative and proper like me because I’m scared by things which are not gray.” ]

I invite you to consider this: Stop using this offensive wording in your hundred+ emails to me each month. We’ll all be better businesspeople for it.

[ Translation: “How the hell can you be making $60k a month talking like this? I’m so pissed off and just wish I could vent in the way you do and make money at the same time.” ]

Be yourself.

Some people will love it.

Some people will hate it.

But you will sleep at night (and make a lot of money in the process).
